American Cancer Society and Bankers Healthcare Group Partner to Bring Free Ridesharing Transportation for Cancer Patients Seeking Treatment

SYRACUSE, NY – July 23, 2018 – A partnership between the American Cancer Society and Bankers Healthcare Group will provide cancer patients in Onondaga County with a new way to get free, reliable rides to and from treatment. A donation from BHG will cover the cost of ridesharing services for local patients who need transportation when a volunteer is unavailable to provide a ride.

While the Society’s volunteer Road To Recovery® program provides cancer patients with free rides to and from treatment, there simply aren’t enough volunteer drivers to reach everyone, and some needs go unmet—until now.

“Every day, thousands of cancer patients need a ride to and from their treatments,” said Stephanie D’Amico, manager of mission delivery for the American Cancer Society in CNY. “Even the best treatment can’t work if a cancer patient can’t get there. That’s why the American Cancer Society’s Road To Recovery program is so important. Now, thanks to the donation from Bankers Healthcare Group, more patients will be able to get to lifesaving treatment.”

“When we heard there are people in our community who don’t have rides to get to and from the life-saving treatment they need, we knew we had to help,” said Chris Panebianco, Chief Marketing Officer at BHG. “We’re fortunate to have so many skilled healthcare professionals in Syracuse, and no patient should be deprived of their treatment because of a lack of transportation. We urge cancer patients to please call the American Cancer Society if they need a ride and they will provide—we’re lucky to have this incredible resource within Central New York.”

When a cancer patient calls the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 to request a ride, the Society will look for a volunteer driver to fill the need. If no volunteer is available, the Society will coordinate a ride for the patient utilizing alternate transportation resources using the money donated by Bankers Healthcare Group.

“On behalf of the Upstate Area board and the Syracuse local council of the American Cancer Society, I would like to thank Bankers Healthcare Group for supporting this initiative,” said Dr. Leslie Kohman, Chair of the American Cancer Society Board in Upstate NY and Director of Outreach for Upstate Cancer Center. “In the relatively poor and largely rural communities in Central New York that rely on cancer care in Syracuse area hospitals and facilities, this support of access through transportation will make sure that all cancer patients will be able to get to their appointments as scheduled and on time. Access is a vital component of good outcomes.”

Volunteer drivers still needed

Volunteer drivers are the backbone of the Road To Recovery program, and they will continue to provide the majority of rides to treatment. The Society is currently seeking volunteer drivers throughout CNY. The organization screens and trains all volunteer drivers, and coordinates the rides for patients. Volunteer drivers donate their time and can provide as many rides as they want.

All drivers must have:

  • A current, valid driver’s license
  • A good driving record
  • Access to a safe and reliable vehicle
  • Regular desktop, laptop, or tablet computer access
  • Proof of car insurance
