Grand Opening: The Lounge with Caesars Sports to Increase Tourism, Revenue and Jobs in Central New York

It was a packed house at the August 1 grand opening of Turning Stone’s new sports book experience, The Lounge with Caesars Sports. The new state-of-the-art venue is a partnership between Oneida Indian Nation and the world-wide leader in sports betting, Caesars Entertainment.

In addition to Turning Stone, the lounge also opened at Point Place on August 1; Yellow Brick Road’s sports book is slated to open later this summer.

These new venues bring sports betting to Central New York for the first time ever, and with it the promise of major increases in tourism, jobs and economic growth to the region.

Oneida Indian Nation Representative and Nation Enterprises CEO Ray Halbritter gave the opening remarks. He was joined on stage by Walt Fales, Senior Vice President of Strategic Development at Caesars; Howard Glaser, Global Head of Government Affairs and Special Initiatives for Scientific Games; Tony Picente, Oneida County Executive; Marianne Buttenschon, New York State Assembly Member; Scott Musacchio, Verona Supervisor; and Rob Esche, President of Utica Comets.

A Tourism Magnet for Sports Fans Everywhere

As the first of its kind in the region, the Lounge with Caesars Sports is on course to become a leading tourism destination in upstate New York. Sports fans will travel far to take part in this unique and exciting experience that the Nation has created in partnership with Caesars Entertainment.

As added incentive, more than three million Caesars Rewards members will now have their levels matched at Nation properties. Caesars will also sponsor special player promotions and events at the new venues, further bringing the excitement of Las Vegas to New York.

Said Walt Fales, senior vice president of strategic development for Caesars Entertainment: “We believe the Lounge with Caesar Sports will set a very high bar in New York for sports betting.”

Scientific Game’s Howard Glazer marveled at the venue’s sleek, modern atmosphere. His company, a global leader in interactive gaming, developed the lounge’s cutting-edge technology.

“I’ve traveled the globe,” he said, “and I have never seen as beautiful a sports-betting facility as you have here at Turning Stone. It’s not only going to lead in New York State. It’s going to lead the region, the east coast, and it’s going to be a gem for the whole nation.”

Upstate New York is the Real Winner

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente and NYS Assembly Member Buttenschon—both long-time partners with the Nation on investment and economic development issues for Central New York— remarked on what a positive impact the lounge will be for the local economy.

“The real winners,” Picente said, “are the people of our community, and the people who come here to make this the number one tourist destination in upstate New York.

Verona Town Supervisor Scott Musacchio, meanwhile, spoke of the more than 60 new jobs the lounges have created, including sports book managers and supervisors, ticket writers, bartenders, beverage servers, cooks, line cooks and food runners.

New positions are opening up regularly, based on the demand the Nation has seen so far.

Mr. Musacchio also praised the venture for employing local contractors and engineering firms. As with numerous other projects across its properties, the Nation worked closely with Greg Lancette from Central-Northern New York Building and Construction Trades Council to bring in local labor and expertise.

In total, the Nation collaborated with more than two dozen local companies, including long-time partners Hayner Hoyt Construction; Zausmer Frisch Scruton & Aggarwal; and Roma Tile and Marble, whose handiwork could most prominently be seen at the lounge’s bar, where they installed a translucent yellow onyx counter top with interior lighting.
